Watch Tenn. Police Chase Escaped Emu for 20 Miles

April 14, 2023
Harriman police tailed an escaped emu across Roane County as the bird reached speeds of up to 40 mph at times before officers surrounded the flightless bird with their cruisers.

Tennessee police were called to pursue an unusual escaped fugitive Wednesday.

An emu, MeeMoo, jumped a 7-foot fence after being scared by nearby logging and fled the private residence where it was housed, WBIR-TV reports. That was the start of what turned into a roughly 20-mile chase across Roane County.

Harriman police officers tailed the flightless bird in their cruisers as MeeMoo reached speeds of up to 40 mph. Police eventually used their cruisers to surround the emu, so the bird's owner and a friend to capture MeeMoo.

"We are grateful for the efforts of the Harriman Police department and all who were involved in locating MeeMoo the Emu today!" the owner wrote in a social media post.
